As many of you know, I’ve long been drawn to the genre of creative nonfiction for its fearless questioning, its intimacy, and its ability to bridge the personal with the political. That’s why I’m especially excited to bring the Upstart & Crow Non-Fiction Writers’ Residency to your attention.
This residency is a rare gem. It provides not only studio space and a $4,000 stipend, but also editorial support and a potential publication opportunity with The Tyee—one of Canada’s most respected independent news outlets. It’s an environment that nourishes both the writer and the writing, with a particular emphasis on work that stretches the boundaries of nonfiction and ignites the conversations our society needs most.
Whether you’re an emerging writer just beginning to shape your voice, or an established author looking to deepen and expand a current project, this residency offers invaluable time, space, and mentorship. It’s designed for writers who are based in or have ties to British Columbia, and it welcomes those who are willing to take risks on the page and speak to the urgency of our current moment.
Applications for the 2025 residency are open until Friday, May 16th at 11pm PDT. The recipient will be announced the week of June 30, with the residency beginning in late July. Here is the link to apply.
