The Writer in the Editor
An editor’s fascination with language, narrative, and a well-rendered line is akin to a writer’s fascination with language, narrative, and a well-rendered line. After the first draft, writers become readers and editors of their own writing as they revise. And similarly, a skillful editor knows how to bring a narrative into its full power.
As an author and a manuscript consultant/editor, Betsy moves back and forth between these relationships all the time. Here are some questions she will consider:
- How do these roles overlap? Do they nourish each other?
- How might you take more risks with this in-betweenness? Experiment with your creativity more? Work more collaboratively with the writers you are editing?
- As a writer and editor, how can you access a more precise language for the forces beneath grammar and craft that you know are important?
Betsy will explore the questions posed above using some of the strategies and concepts she has included in her recent book,Breathing the Page: Reading the Act of Writing.
Please bring: two pages of your own writing; a page or two of another writer’s text to which you brought your most creative and skillful editing.
