Mineral School is a new artists residency in a former 1940s grade school near Mt. Rainier, in Mineral, WA, a funky and forgotten fishing lake town that’s two hours southeast of Seattle or about five hours from Vancouver. During summer 2016, they are offering four two-week residency periods to 15 writers and one regional visual artist.
Each resident will live in an 800-square foot former classroom that offers peekaboo views of Mineral Lake and Mt. Rainier, and that will double as a writing studio, with desk and chair, lighting, bookcase, etc. The main school building has bathrooms with showers, as does the neighboring gym. Residents will be served three meals and snacks daily, and they will have the opportunity to share work with the public. The town of Mineral features a swimmable fishing lake, a tavern, a B&B, a general store, two churches, and a post office. It’s a 20-minute drive to Mt. Rainier National Park.
